I sometimes ...I'm glad you enjoyed our markets. I sometimes forget how spoiled we are in Montreal in many ways. I was also glad to see your bit on the Forks. I'm heading up to Winnipeg later this week and as the city's year-round market I had figured it'd be similar to our Atwater market. I'm glad to have it put in perspective before I arrive! Still looking forward to exploring your culinary scene though!Amanda S. I miss being in Toronto for Kensington and the St.Lawrence market... but even little Halifax has a really good indoor farmer's market in the old Brewery building near the water front that brags to be "The oldest continuously operating Farmers' Market in North America. Since 1850!" http://www.halifaxfarmersmarket.com/<br />Although it only runs on saturdays, the Halifax market is year-round and has a decent number of vendors (i.e more than one butcher, various produce stands... maybe only one fishmonger, come to think of it... fish is not as abundant as one would think for being on the coast), and adds outdoor sellers in the summer. And you could easily get a week's worth of goods and return the next week for more! This was the routine for many Haligonians (at least when I lived there from '96-98) since the market was also just a great place to hang around and drink a cappuccino and people watch! I wouldn't say there was such a vibe of "excellence" - it's on the relaxed end of the scale, and there just aren't enough people in a city that size to drive fierce competition - but it's a darn good market, and the 'Peg's got 3x the population! Why can't we do better than the forks? GOOD RANT ALEXANDER.Angelanoreply@blogger.com
